Conducting policy research on the digital transformation of primary healthcare systems

Our team is actively collaborating with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies to advance their efforts in several key areas, including primary health care (PHC), digital public health, telemedicine, human resources for health, and social participation.

Our contributions have been diverse and impactful, and include coordinating, editing, and co-authoring a primer on PHC. We have also conducted extensive desk research and provided valuable insights to policy briefs related to the digital transformation of health systems. In addition, we have contributed to policy briefs and session submissions on human resources for health, leveraging our expertise to support the Observatory's strategic goals. Finally, we are actively involved in supporting efforts to pass a resolution on social participation, recognising the crucial role of multi-stakeholder engagement in collectively shaping effective global public health policies.

Developing principles for the governance of health data

As part of a working group, we helped to mobilise resources and promote a new set of health data governance principles. These principles were developed by over 130 civil society organisations through an inclusive, consultative process that included eight global and regional workshops and a public consultation. Our contribution included raising awareness of these principles and fostering stakeholder engagement to increase the number of endorsements. The principles are organised around three key areas: protecting people, promoting health value, and prioritising equity in the governance of health data across public health systems and policies.

Advocating for increased investment in digital health

Our team collaborated with TransformHealth to develop an effective advocacy engagement strategy and policy briefs aimed at increasing investment in digitally-enabled primary healthcare systems. Specifically, we worked closely with TransformHealth to identify key stakeholders and decision-makers in the healthcare sector and to develop targeted messaging that would resonate with these audiences. Additionally, we conducted extensive research and analysis to inform the development of policy briefs that outlined the benefits of digitally-enabled primary healthcare systems and provided evidence-based recommendations for policymakers.

Our efforts resulted in the successful dissemination of these policy briefs to key stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare providers, and donors, and contributed to a broader conversation about the importance of investing in digitally-enabled primary healthcare as a means of improving health outcomes and promoting health equity.

Connecting scientific community hubs to foster research on digital health and A.I.

Our team played a crucial role in guiding and operationalising the function of I-DAIR, a scientific collaboration platform focused on AI and digital health. We provided comprehensive support to I-DAIR, coordinating their engagement with research partners and expanding their network of strategic and project-level partnerships. This involved finalising a dynamic and actionable engagement strategy, organising a Science consortium meeting, and deepening engagement with the Hubs network. Our efforts also helped to significantly grow the existing network of strategic partnerships, ensuring that I-DAIR was well-positioned for a successful launch. Through our collaboration, we were able to establish I-DAIR as a leading platform for cutting-edge research in AI and digital health, supporting its mission to drive positive change and innovation in these critical areas.

Building a movement to improve digital health governance

We played an integral role in supporting the Lancet & Financial Times Commission on "Growing up in a digital world: Governing health futures 2030" in developing a clear set of recommendations focused on digital health governance, with a specific emphasis on ensuring that youth voices were represented and amplified. This involved undertaking a range of policy, research, and advocacy activities aimed at identifying key issues and challenges related to digital health governance and engaging with stakeholders to develop solutions.

Additionally, we were responsible for developing the youth engagement strategy, which included a series of engagement sessions aimed at producing a youth statement and call for action, and Lancet commentary that reflected the perspectives and priorities of young people. Finally, we planned and hosted events at conferences and high-level meetings to disseminate the Commission's recommendations and raise awareness about the importance of engaging youth in digital health governance. Overall, our efforts helped to ensure that the voices of young people were heard and incorporated into the Commission's final recommendations, which have the potential to shape the future of digital health governance.

Improving engagement with the armed forces community in healthcare

We supported the Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation by assisting with the operationalisation of their equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) strategy, and identifying ways to effectively engage with veterans. We conducted comprehensive user research and facilitated focus groups to gain insights into the specific needs and challenges faced by veterans. We then co-developed a theory of change that was grounded in the feedback received from these groups.

The final output was a detailed programme report which included patient stories and outlined key recommendations and next steps. Our efforts helped to ensure that the Foundation's EDI strategy was effectively implemented and that it reflected the unique needs and experiences of veterans.

Implementing digital transformation in a group of GP surgeries

Our team provided valuable assistance to the First4Health group, a collection of NHS GP surgeries located in East London, by streamlining their administrative tasks through automation. Our comprehensive approach involved identifying the specific tasks that could be automated, providing recommendations to improve patient triage, and supporting performance optimisation efforts. Through our efforts, we were able to improve operational efficiency and reduce the workload for administrative staff, allowing them to focus on providing high-quality care to their patients.

Developing partnerships for frontline placements and consulting projects

Our team played an instrumental role in facilitating partnerships between Year Here, a leading postgraduate course in social innovation based in London, and host organisations, for their frontline placements and consulting projects. We utilised a range of strategies such as stakeholder mapping, assessed the relevance and interest of each potential partner, and reached out to them. Our goal was to establish mutually beneficial relationships that could generate meaningful outcomes for both organisations. Our efforts resulted in successful collaborations that allowed future fellows to gain valuable experience and make a positive impact in the community.

Training future global health leaders through simulations of policy responses to outbreaks

Our team was responsible for developing and running the "Outbreak! Infectious Diseases" strand of the UCL Global Citizenship Programme (GCP), a novel educational initiative that combined lectures on epidemics and pandemics with hands-on exercises in resolution-drafting as well as debating and reaching consensus with a range of stakeholders while embodying the foreign policy of an assigned country.

As part of this work, we collaborated closely with staff from the School of Pharmacy to develop the programme curriculum and ensure that it aligned with the learning objectives of the GCP. We were also responsible for coordinating speakers, panellists, and navigators, as well as booking rooms and managing budgets to ensure that the programme ran smoothly. In addition, we played a key role in recruitment efforts, identifying and selecting participants who were interested in developing their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and crisis management.
